Glacier National park

glacier-national-park

My first visit to Glacier National Park was in the heart of the winter in December of 2005. By the time I arrived, the majority of Going to the Sun Road had already been buried under a significant amount of snow, relegating me to the first 11 miles along the shores of Lake McDonald.

At the time, I was so amazed by the near-paralyzed beauty winter brings to this of this little slice of the park that I had no regrets about not seeing the rest. In fact, while I knew I wanted to come back during the summer to explore deeper into the park, I had no idea how ignorant I was to the shear magnitude of the park until my return trips a few years later.

Everyone has different touchpoints with the park – lodging, whitewater rafting/kayaking, hiking, and even for a lucky few – working. But the real beauty of the park is that while all those experiences add to the adventure and understanding of the park, visitors who only drive through will not leave feeling cheated. In recent years, the 53 mile road has been under a long reconstruction project leading to stop and go traffic – causing significant traffic delays. But trust me, if there was one place on earth you would wish to be stuck in traffic, this is it!

Rather than share all of the various details and insights about ways to enjoy Glacier National Park on this page, I’ve created a series of blogs found in the Glacier National Park drop down above – which highlights my experiences and corresponding images for each category.

I welcome you to view and enjoy each of the blogs, and encourage you to stop back periodically as I continue to add more content and monitor the news and happenings at Glacier National Park.

The beauty and magnitude of Glacier National Park can be an overwhelming experience best described as sensory overload. As a result, for the casual visitor, it takes a lot of exploring to better understand how it all ties together. One mountain blends into another. And a sudden change in direction leads to a whole new perspective.

The map below is an excellent way to “tour” the park to better understand how the different regions of the park all tie together: West Glacier, Going to the Sun Road, Logan’s Pass, Many Glacier, Two Medicine, St Mary, and East Glacier to name a few. And for those, like myself, who have been to Glacier multiple times, but still can’t make it back enough, this map provides an excellent escape back to the park.
